A bittersweet social drama and intimate road movie about the confrontation between two very different worlds. A sensual story set against the exotic landscapes of Guatemala, exploring grief, maternal love, and the difficult attempts to understand the identities of those closest to us.
Marta (Katarzyna Butowtt), once a popular Polish singer, receives the devastating news of the sudden death of her adult son Daniel in Guatemala. Determined to bring his body home, she embarks on a long journey. Upon her arrival, she is met by Marco (Juan Diego Paiz), Daniel’s life partner, whose existence she had known nothing about. Their journey through the dense countryside and Guatemalan backroads, initially marked by distrust and a struggle for control, gradually turns into a moving confrontation with Marta’s own perceptions of her deceased son and questions about the limits of intimacy.
Blaise Grisson
Director, screenwriter, and actor. His work frequently explores transcultural and identity-related themes, as well as the collision of different sensibilities. Tierra Viva is his feature-length project, produced as a Polish-Guatemalan international co-production that combines a naturalistic storytelling style with an intimate psychological portrait of its characters.
