Medieval England engulfed in popular unrest. Paul Greengrass brings his uncompromising, hyperrealistic style to the 14th century, creating a raw and gritty spectacle about the limits of human endurance.
In the aftermath of the Black Death and under the burden of crippling taxes, an exhausted nation reaches the brink of its endurance. When the Crown’s ruthless demands strike impoverished villages, a farmer known as Ploughman (Andrew Garfield), having lost those closest to him, takes the lead in a peasant resistance movement. Thousands of desperate people gather around him, led by Wat Tyler and the charismatic preacher John Ball. The rebellion transforms into a great march on London, giving rise to the mythical legend of resistance against tyranny.
