War invades the life of a Russian oligarch, whose private world begins to fall apart alongside his business empire
Russia, 2022. Gleb, a successful company director, leads a life built on the illusion of stability, control and security. But mounting pressure, the crisis unfolding around him and a chance encounter set in motion a chain of events that becomes increasingly difficult to control. An adaptation of Claude Chabrol’s “The Unfaithful Wife”, “Minotaur” transforms an intimate story of betrayal into a dark portrait of a society engulfed in moral chaos. In a world where the boundaries between guilt, violence and indifference have disappeared, a spiral of events leads inevitably to tragedy.
In the media
«This question contains the most tragic diagnosis of Russian society offered by Minotaur – a film that leads us through the familiar paths of an ancient moral tale, only to underline the fact that morality disappeared from this world long ago.»
— Maciej Roch Satora, Filmweb, read the full review here
«A penetrating story of the moral collapse of Putin’s Russia. (…) Some, especially the elites, use the machinery of war to settle their private scores, while others remain passive.»
— Kuba Armata, Interia, read the full review here
«Zvyagintsev returns to Russia – a state of ghosts and shapes resembling people. There is no society, no faith and no hope. There is only a theatre in which the illusion of happiness or love will soon be thrown off the balcony. Everyone has a window, but no one reacts. A film that brilliantly exposes Russian society, its powerlessness and moral decline. It was not the regime alone that created the monster, but society as a whole – including the upper class, which simply plays along with what others impose on it.»
— Filip Mańka, Filmweb capsule review
