Create like cinema icons
The 15th Action Camera Festival is a tribute to great artists whose work marked turning points in the history of cinema and blazed trails for generations to come. The patron of this year’s Authors Spotlight International Competition is Dorothy Arzner, the only female director within the studio system of the 1930s and 1940s in Hollywood. Although her work was ignored by film critics for many years, she impetuously broke many barriers, becoming a pioneer in an industry dominated by men. She is a filmmaker of courage and determination – her films with strong female characters, including “Dance, Girl, Dance” and “Christopher Strong” with Katharine Hepburn, went beyond the stereotypes of the time. The organizers of the Authors Spotlight competition are looking for just such creators of short shorts and animations – those distinguished by originality, passion, courage in filmmaking, who want to inspire others with their work. The call for entries runs until August 31, 2024. Orson Welles, the icon of the Critic’s Speech Competition, a legend of cinema (“Citizen Kane”), theater (Broadway’s “Caesar”), but also a master of radio, also speaks in his powerful voice at this year’s Action Camera. His famous 1938 radio play “War of the Worlds” caused mass panic and showed how powerful an impact a skillfully told story can have. There’s a reason Welles is the patron of this year’s Critic Talk competition. It is the Critic’s Talk that seeks authors of audiovisual content about film who can, like him, see the potential in spoken forms of narrative, build suspense and stir the audience’s imagination. This is an opportunity for critics who know how to transport listeners into the world of cinema, using words the way Welles used sounds. Authors of vlogs, film audios, video essays or film podcasts can enter the competition until October 4, 2024.
